High activity when Jame Shaft presented their new heat treatment line
On a cold morning in November Mika Tuunainen, CEO of Jame Shaft, greeted a group of Finnish heat treatment professionals to review their heat treatment line that has been in use for a good year now.
Following a dramatic fire in 2009 Jame Shaft ordered a complete new heat treatment line from Cieffe Forni Industriali to carburize the axes and pins they machine for heavy duty applications.Specifics of the whole project received a lot of attention and Mika was faced with many tricky questions. When let into the heat treatment area the group scattered all over the equipment and critically inspected components and systems in the control and operation of the line. The vast experience of the visitors was well reflected in all detailed questions and profound comments
To conclude the day, partners of Nordic Metallurgy Oy: Cieffe, AFE Cronite and SSI, presented aspects of the heat treatment industry followed by time for more relaxed exchange if ideas and experiences. We thank all participants for their active and inspired approach.

Nordic Metallurgy extending to Finland
This summer the Finnish subsidiary Nordic Metallurgy Oy was founded. The new company was established to improve the support of the Finnish market and of all the Finnish customers supported in the past by the mother Nordic Metallurgy AB in Arlandastad, Sweden. From the start Nordic Metallurgy Oy offers the same range of services and products as the Swedish company, but now closer and on local terms and conditions.
With the beginning of Nordic Metallurgy Oy, Pär Mickos joined the company as a partner. Pär has previous experience in the field of heat treatment as CEO of a Nordic furnace supplier. In addition he brings along his experience from the automotive, mechanical and steel industry where he served in different executive positions. Within Nordic Metallurgy, Pär will primarily be responsible of our activities in Finland.
Oxygen probe service
Nordic Metallurgy AB is now further developing our services for Oxygen probes. We have complete facilities for testing and repair in our premises in Arlandastad.
We can offer the following:
REFURBISHMENT
We clean and refurb used probes and exchange failed parts prior testing.
TESTING
All probes are tested and documented before delivery. The test comprises:
- mV – output versus reference in simulated carbon atmosphere at 900°C
- Thermocouple deviation from reference
- Resistance at 900°C
- Leak integrity mV/min with reference air off
- Time to 99 % of original mV after short
CALIBRATION
When desired we make a complete calibration in controlled carbon atmosphere.
We offer 3 different service programmes:
- Refurb and testing
- Cleaning and testing – for all types of probes
- Banking – used customer probes are stored in our premises and refurbed and tested after call
Nordic Metallurgy AB sell and store new SSI Ceragold oxygen probes in standard lengths, 600, 750 and 900 mm. The probes can be delivered with thermocouple type K, R or S.
Nordic Metallurgy supplies ”turn-key” hardening line to major Swedish engineering company
Nordic Metallurgy recently delivered a complete “turn-key” hardening line to a major Swedish engineering company.
The furnace equipment consists of one hardening furnace together with a tempering furnace. The parts to be hardened are heated to temperature in the hardening furnace and then by the operator controlled handling device directly quenched in the water quench tank. The water tank is equipped with special water agitators guaranteeing a perfectly uniform hardening result. The parts are then directly transferred to the second furnace for tempering.
Low Pressure Nitriding Furnace for Gästrike Härdverkstad AB
Gästrike Härdverkstad is the first hardening shop in the Nordic countries choosing Low Pressure Nitriding. The furnace was delivered by Nordic Metallurgy late 2008 and is now in full production. The furnace is a B54BN model and designed for the Low Pressure Nitriding process (nitriding/nitrocarburising). The furnace is also designed for tempering under vacuum. The B54RN has an effective max load weight of 600kg and max dimension 600 x 600 x 900 mm. Standard Low Pressure Nitriding furnaces are available up to 2000kg load weight.
One reason to why Gästrike Härdverkstad choose this process was that the nitriding takes place under low pressure/vacuum, which means superior reproduceability and a gas consumption just a fraction compared to ordinary conventional nitriding furnaces.
The design also enables much faster heating-up and cooling sequences connected to a substantially lower energy cost compared to conventional furnaces.
